Colorado’s unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage point to 7.4 percent from December to January, the state Department of Labor and Employment said Wednesday.

That compares with 6.7 percent a year ago.

Seeing is believing.

On the Saturday in question, neither Sam Moss nor Michal Bower got even the slightest glimpse of what they were doing.

As it turned out, it was better than anybody else in the competition. Come Sunday, it was definitely a sight to behold.

“I actually did watch it,” said Moss of her state-championship swim in the Class 4A 100-yard butterfly. “It made me feel like it was a good thing I did the things I did because I don’t know if I didn’t do them that it would have been me that won. I’d always had trouble with keeping my head down, so it was a good thing I listened to (coach) Kayli (Changstrom).”

Bower, like Moss, went to a dance after their state meets, so taking a peek at what they’d done had to wait until the next morning.

Rick Spowart dreads the middle of April because it is the time, every year, that humans start encountering bears.

“Any week now, especially if we get a little warmer weather, bears will start coming out of their dens,” said the Colorado Division of Wildlife agent.

WINDSOR – There’s no shortage of fun in winning a soccer game by blowout proportion.

But it might feel a bit better to scratch and claw one’s way to victory, which is what the Mountain View High School girls team accomplished Wednesday at Windsor, bearing down to claim a 1-0 victory for its first win of the season.

WICHITA, Kan. – On the surface, the Colorado Eagles were walking into one of those trap-game situations Wednesday night.

Having played two games at home last weekend and getting two more this weekend, the Eagles had to trek out to Wichita for a game against the team with the fewest points in the Central Hockey League.
