Three years for man who dragged dog

The man who dragged Buddy the dog to death last winter on Colorado National Monument will serve three years in federal prison and then a year of supervised probation.

U.S. District Judge Philip A. Brimmer also fined Romero $500 and ordered him to pay $345 to Buddy’s owners.

We have a small pond (about 100 gallons of water)  with a small circulating pump, but would like to put in some kind of water plants, such as water lilies. In the past, algae has been a problem, and we are presently using chlorine tablets to keep the algae from growing. However, I understand that chlorine will kill the water plants.

My question: Is there a chemical or other product I can use to keep the algae from growing in warm or hot weather that will not kill the water plants? If so what would you recommend?

McInnis still owes foundation $300,000

Former congressman Scott McInnis still hasn’t paid the $300,000 he earned for his plagiarized “Musings on Water,” and the foundation that hired him is considering legal action to get it back.

Drew Dougherty, executive director of the Hasan Family Foundation, said Friday the only contact it has had with the GOP gubernatorial candidate since it demanded McInnis pay back the entire amount July 16 has been between attorneys for both sides.

For Breeden, the emphasis is definitely on community. “I have a passion for community,” he explained. The landscape architect sees the garden as a way to promote community spirit and to “alleviate unhealthy eating.”

Suspect in wife’s murder hangs himself in jail

An inmate accused of stabbing his wife to death in March killed himself in his Mesa County jail cell Thursday night, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department.

Octavio Vargas-Herrera, 25, was jailed on a first-degree-murder charge and was slated to head to trial in mid-December. Vargas-Herrera pleaded not guilty July 1.
