Many Big Country district ratings rise; AISD ranked lowest

Three times as many Big Country school districts earned the state’s highest academic rating this year, an improvement trend realized throughout Texas largely as a result of a controversial measure that allows students to be credited even if they didn’t pass.

The Big Country also followed the statewide trend of having fewer school districts at the bottom.

The Abilene Independent School District is the only Unacceptable district in the Big Country, which had four Unacceptable districts last year. Abilene ISD is one of 30 districts out of 2,624 in Texas to receive an Academically Unacceptable rating in 2009-2010. Last year, the state had 87 Unacceptable districts.

Novice ISD makes stride in TEA ratings to acceptable

The Texas Education Agency has rated the Novice Independent School District Academically Acceptable for the first time in three years.

“It was time,” said Novice ISD Superintendent Dale Freeman. “We’re pretty excited. We feel like those hard times are behind us. Everyone knew what was on the line.”

Texas Education Agency spokeswoman DeEtta Culbertson said the TAKS regulations violated by former Albany Junior/Senior High teacher Lisa Palmore are clearly defined.

On a yearly basis “every test administrator signs a confidentiality oath,” after participating in TAKS security training sessions or viewing online modules, Culbertson said.
